Fascinating and adventurous tour through unknown parts of northern Laos. It starts on the Thai border and ends in Luang Prbang. This trip is especially for nature lovers, who want to experience the beautiful region in a unique way. There is some easy trekking involved, suitable for just about everyone.
After the immigration check point, visit the old military post from the French, Fort Carnot. There is a great view from the watchtower over Huay Xay and the mighty Mekong River. Drive towards Luang Namtha with stops at the Khmu and Lu hill tribe settlements. Later on inspect the Kao Rao Cave, revealing imposing limestone formations. Round mid-afternoon arrive at the hotel in Luang Namtha with check in and time to relax or explore the village.
After breakfast climb to the Phoumpok Stupa, offering a great view over Luang Namtha. From here the trail leads through the jungle. On the way the local guide will point out the different foods and medicines, which are collected from the locals. The following delicious picnic-lunch in middle of the dense forest will be prepared from locals and the guide, using bamboo pipes for cooking. Afterwards the path takes you to the charming Akha hill tribe village of Ban Nammutmai. Besides observing the daily activities of this tiny ethnic group, the guide will translate old local stories, told by the locals, and explain their meaning. A drive in a pickup truck leads to Ban Nam Jang, a Lanten village. Here the locals are specialized in producing Saa paper. Final stop at the lively market place in Luang Nam Tha, then back to the hotel.
Following breakfast drive towards Muang La with the first stop at Namdeng Nua, a Lanten village. At Oudomxay will be a lunch break. Next you can admire the fascinating 400 years old Buddha-statue at the Pra Xack Kham Temple. Locals believe in its supernatural powers and often pilgrimage to this sacred place. By midafternoon arrive in Muang La with check in at the hotel. Afterwards time to take a bath in the famous natural hot springs and relax during a traditional massage.
Transfer by 4WD vehicle after breakfast to Pak Khai, where you will encounter an astonishing view over small villages, rice terraces and the Pak Nam River. During the following trek, along a small trail, you will have the chance to meet locals, working their paddy fields. Observe how they cultivate the hilly lands, fish and hunt. The path leads to Ban Phavie, a small idyllic Khamu village, sitting atop a hill. After a picnic lunch visit a picturesque waterfall, with time to relax and bath in the cascades with clear water. Later on walk back to the vehicle and return to the resort in Muang La.
After breakfast drive to Muang Khua, a riverside town in the Nam Ou River, where you board a private boat. The river cruise reveals terrific sceneries and secluded hill tribe settlements such as the Khmu and Hmong village of Ban Sob Jaem. This remarkable boat trip ends at Nong Khiaw. After check in at the hotel you can relax or make an easy bicycle ride to the nearby photogenic limestone caves. Your guide will be glad to assist.
Following breakfast the road leads south towards Luang Prabang. The scenery changes and opens up into rolling landscapes. Admire the surrounding rice fields with the beautiful Nam Ou River. Stop by the mysterious Pak Ou caves. The two caves are in a limestone cliff on the banks of the Mekong. They contain thousands of Buddha statues, vary in sizes and shapes. Around noon you arrive in Luang Prabang with check in at the hotel. The rest of the day is at your leisure.
After breakfast the tour starts with the Royal Palace Museum, giving you an overview of the local past. Afterwards a leisure walk on quiet back lanes takes you to some hidden gems. The area comprises of traditional old Lao houses and beautiful French colonial buildings. There are several stops to admire the beauty such as the decorative carvings at Wat Chomkhong and the appealing Wat Phapai. At the Fine Arts School you can enjoy the high quality artwork. The final stop is at Wat Xiengthong. This gorgeous temple is built in classical Luang Prabang style and has a roof which is almost touching the ground. After heading back to the hotel. The rest of the day is at your leisure.
Transfer after breakfast to the ‘Living Lands Organic Farm’. You can interact and experience all different steps of harvesting rice, properly explained by the local farming guide. The local farmers are still using the old method instead of modern machinery. In the end you can taste some traditional rice food. Then drive to the picturesque Kuang Si Waterfall for a picnic lunch. Before returning back to the hotel, stop by the nearby Bear Rescue Centre. Their main task, besides protecting the rare Asiatic Black Bear, is to rehabilitate them, after rescuing the bears from poachers. Afterwards transfer back to your hotel.
The rest of the day is at your leisure.
After breakfast spend the remaining hours till the transfer to the airport at your own leisure.
