This tour will introduce the Mon- and Kayin States, known only to a few foreigners. The two states offer not only cultural and historical highlights but will show travelers a beautiful unspoiled countryside. You will meet the very friendly locals and enjoy their exquisite culinary dishes. It is undoubtedly one of the best off-the-beaten routes in Myanmar.
Early morning pick up by the guide in your hotel and drive direction northeast towards Bago. On the way visit a war cemetery of allied troops in the vicinity of Htaukkyan. In Bago visit the famous Shwemawdaw Pagoda and the lying Buddha Shwethalyaung. You will also see the Kanbawza Thadi palace and Kyaikpun Pagoda with the 27 meter high standing Buddha. The journey continues now straight to the south. In the late afternoon you will reach Mawlamyine on the southern coast, 300 km away from Yangon. It is beautifully placed between the hills, dotted with pagodas, and the Andaman Sea. After check-in at the hotel you are free to explore the nearby area.
The guide will pick you up after breakfast for a half hours walk through the center of Mawlamyine. It leads along well preserved colonial buildings, two mosques and a few old churches as St. Matthew’s and St. Gabriel’s. After take a Trishaw for a short ride to the busy daily market near the Strand Hotel. Stroll through the colorful market and taste some of the delicious fruits such as Moulmein’s Pomelo. The guide will escort you after to one of the famous restaurants, offering delicious Chinese and Myanmar food. Then return to the hotel for a rest.
In the late afternoon short drive to Sein Don Pagoda with the attached monastery. The monks will show you around the temple complex and will be happy to receive a small donation. Before heading back to the hotel, you visit the Kipling Pagoda. Form here you have a splendid view over the town and can admire a romantic sunset.
After breakfast in the hotel drive for a daytrip 65 kilometers to the south. In Thanbyuzayat, located straight on the Andaman coast, you visit an important World War II historical site. There is a War Cemetery and a Death Railway Museum. During the infamous Siam-Burma Railway construction thousands of forced labors, mostly Thais and Burmese as well Allied prisoners, built the tracks for the Japanese army.
On the road back you visit Kyaikhami Yele Pagoda, placed over the blue Andaman Sea. By the small hand weaving workshops in Mudon is another stop. Before reaching Mawlamyine you can admire the world’s longest reclining Buddha image which is 170 meters long. Transfer back to your hotel for overnight.
The guide will pick you up after breakfast for the return drive to Yangon, this time on another route. The journey takes you to Hpa An, the capital of Kayin State. The area is dotted with a chain of hills, impressive caves and magnificent lakes. Atop of an imposing boulder you visit Kyauk Kalat Pagoda. Then head to a very unique small settlement. All the villagers are wearing white clothes and are vegetarians. Just a short drive further on awaits you the Lumbini Garden with the beautiful pagoda complex. It is placed at the foot of Zwekabin Mountain, dotted with hundreds of seated Buddha sculptures. It is a very extraordinary place. In the evening you reach Yangon.
